Friends of Adaire work to enrich and support the education at Fishtown's Alexander Adaire K-8 School.
We're hosting a public Q&A with Principal Anna Jenkins wrapping up her first year leading Alexander Adaire K-8 at the Fishtown Recreation Center, Thursday, June 18, 6-7 p.m. Hear about all the amazing developments at Adaire this year and hear about exciting news for next school year, including an update about the effort to transform the schoolyard at Thompson and Palmer. As usual with a Friends of Adaire event, this one's kid-friendly! Children ages 2 and over are invited to make art with Alexis Olsen, who's starting up Palmer Pond Art Center, an arts and dance hub at Montgomery and Gaul down the block from Adaire. Lexy will be leading arts activities in one room at the Fishtown Rec from 6 to 7 p.m. while Principal Jenkins talks to parents in another room.
REGISTER FOR KINDERGARTEN!
Children who will be 5 years old by September 1st, 2015, can start at Adaire, but parents or guardians should contact Principal Jenkins and Marybeth Sgrillo in the Adaire office at (215) 291-4712 before school closes on June 19th! Parents will need to bring immunization records, driver's license, birth certificate, and 2 proofs of address/utility bills. If you're applying but don't live in the Adaire catchment area, you'll need to call the office or stop by in person to get a Voluntary Transfer application.
COMCAST CARES DAY, Saturday, April 25th was truly a remarkable day for Adaire. Comcast picked our beloved K-8 school in Fishtown for its huge Comcast Cares Day of service, sending many employees to volunteer, buying supplies and coordinating the complicated event. Friends of Adaire worked with Comcast, Home & School, Principal Jenkins, teachers, staff, students, parents, neighbors, and so many others to accomplish a long list of cleaning, painting, polishing and planting goals. We are so incredibly grateful for the countless ways so many people contributed to making our school look better!

The Adaire SCHOOLYARD IS GOING TO BE TRANSFORMED, and Friends of Adaire is leading the effort! Building on the design architect Ian Smith created for us based on input we collected in fall 2014, we are pushing for progress with our partners in the City and School District. The Philadelphia Water Department is planning to contribute a rain garden, trees, and permeable soft surface; and Council President Darrell Clarke has pledged to bring a state-of-the-art playground structure to Adaire, plus some other amenities we'll enjoy. Stay tuned for a public meeting about the schoolyard sometime in the late summer/early fall. And as of late May, our city partners still thought that a construction timeline of summer 2016 was doable!
Friends of Adaire have had a BLAST at our HAPPY HOUR FUNDRAISERS! The last Thursday of the month at different bars around Fishtown, these events have raised a lot of money for Adaire and our spirits tremendously! We have had great turnouts for nights out at Fette Sau on May 28th, Murph's on April 30th, our event at Cedar Point on Feb. 26, and our HAPPY HOUR FUNDRAISER at Frankford Hall was a rousing success! We raised $1,000 at the Thursday, January 29th, event for Adaire's awesome MUSIC program, enabling us to buy instruments and music supplies requested by Adaire's music teachers!
